Viking Ocean Cruises has expanded its current order with shipbuilder Fincantieri, to add six more ships, bringing the total ordered and on option to sixteen.
If the cruise line exercises all of its new options it would see Fincantieri deliver the six new ships between 2024 and 2027. Viking has four ships sailing at present and the announcement has come just before the naming of the fourth, Viking Sun.
The six new ships would be of a similar design to Viking’s existing ships, which can carry 930 passengers in all-balcony upscale vessels. However plans will be altered slightly to incorporate some of the latest technologies available.
Viking Chairman, Torstein Hagen said: “When we launched our first ocean ship in 2015, we set out to reinvent ocean cruising. We focus on the destination, and we do not cram our ships with gimmicks and water slides.”
