National Geographic photographer, Michael Yamashita, joins Explorer Dream

Guests onboard Explorer Dream’s relocation cruise from Asia to Australia will have the opportunity to sharpen their photography skills thanks to a special guest onboard – National Geographic photographer Michael Yamashita.

Dream Cruises has designed and curated an enrichment programme – ‘Dreamscapes’ – a programme of interactive guest activities and experiences presented by a portfolio of world-class speakers, who aim to enthuse and inspire guests with their expertise and passion for their specialist subjects. The programme runs across the whole Dream Cruises fleet, and features expert speakers from such wide-ranging fields as Astrophotography, Chinese Opera, Pizza Acrobatics, Yoga and Tai Chi. ‘Dreamscapes’ offers guests of all ages the opportunity to spark new passions and deepen existing interests, adding a new dimension to their journey at sea.

Award-winning travel photographer Michael Yamashita is set to join the programme when Explorer Dream cruises from Shanghai to Sydney between 6 and 27 October 2019. The legendary National Geographic photographer will lead a series of masterclasses onboard, inviting passengers to “Explore Through the Lens”.

The photographic workshops have been designed for guests wanting to hone their skills in travel photography and to provide insights into how to shoot the best locations and capture unique and memorable moments in each port of call on the cruise – Shanghai, Hong Kong, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Jakarta, Bali, Darwin, Cairns and Gladstone.

Michael Yamashita has been a National Geographic photographer for over 30 years and has won numerous awards from the National Photographers Association and the Asian American Journalists Association. He also won the Best Historical Documentary prize for his feature documentary, The Ghost Fleet, at the New York Independent Film Festival and his National Geographic Channel documentary, Marco Polo: The China Mystery Revealed, received two Asian Television and Film Awards. It was also included in the top 20 most popular National Geographic Channel documentaries of the decade. Major exhibits of his work have opened throughout Asia, in Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul, Hong Kong, Mumbai, Taipei and Singapore, as well as in Rome, Venice, Frankfurt and Perpignan, France. His work has been exhibited at galleries in Los Angeles and at the National Gallery in Washington, DC. Author of over 10 books mostly inspired by his 30 National Geographic stories.

The unique photography tours will concentrate primarily on helping participants see and shoot in new and exciting ways, as Yamashita aims to answer the questions: What makes great travel photography? What should I focus on? What are the images that will really stand out now and when I look back on this trip in 20 years?

Yamashita will also hold a series of talks at sea, covering topics such as camera basics, essential equipment, planning your shoot and how to use lighting to your advantage. Budding travel photographers will be particularly interested to here Yamashita’s tips on “Great Travel Photography vs Snapshots: What Makes the Difference?”
