NEW Sydney harbour terminal at Yarra Bay or Molineaux Point

Cruise Development Plan released by the NSW government shows they are committed to growing the cruise industry and support tourism, jobs and economic growth.

In 2016–17 the cruise industry supported 12,841 jobs, injected more than $27 million into NSW regional communities, and $1.6 billion into the state overall, but that is set to grow with the support of the Cruise Development Plan.

The Cruise Development Plan (CDP) delivers on a recommendation in the 2012 Visitor Economy Industry Action Plan to create a long-term plan for the NSW cruise industry.

According to the CDP, Sydney was named best cruise destination in Australia and New Zealand and Best Australian Homeport in 2016. Around 80 per cent of domestic passengers and 11 per cent of international passengers begin their cruise in Sydney before travelling to other locations, with passengers on average visiting 1.4 states across Australia during their stay.

Additionally, 79 per cent of domestic and 33 per cent of international passengers end their cruise in Sydney, with 84 per cent of international visitors staying up to four nights in the city before or after their cruise, which increases their city visitor expenditure.

You can view the full plan here.

The NSW Government has invested more than $135 million upgrading cruise terminal facilities in Sydney Harbour and $44 million developing the ports of Newcastle and Eden.

The plan builds on the NSW Government’s significant investments in the state’s cruise industry. The CDP details ten actions to support the industry both in Sydney and in regional NSW, with options to address short, medium and long-term capacity constraints.

This will ensure that NSW remains a world-class cruise destination and continues to capitalise on economic benefits this industry brings to our state.

The CDP is the NSW Government’s response to recommendations from the Cruise Industry Reference Group (the Reference Group), led by the Hon Peter Collins AM QC. The NSW Government accepted the recommendations from the Reference Group in December 2017. The Cruise Industry Reference Group recommendations can be found in appendix one of the CDP.

One of the CDP’s actions is to develop a Strategic Business Case to investigate the viability of potential sites, recommended by the Reference Group, for a new passenger cruise terminal.

The Strategic Business Case is the first step in a detailed process for understanding the feasibility and location of any new cruise infrastructure.

Before any decision is made, the NSW Government will consult extensively with the community and undertake detailed environmental studies.
