Children of Westmead add a Splash of Colour to Carnival Splendor

Australia’s newest and largest cruise ship will feature a colourful mural inspired by drawings created by kids at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead

Carnival Cruise Line called on creative kids from Carnival’s charitable partner, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to assist in designing a mural for Carnival Splendor’s Splashy Cove waterpark.

Splashy Cove is an enclosed, kid-friendly area onboard Carnival Splendor with mini waterslides, interactive toys and spray fountains and is the perfect spot for the little ones to splash around to their heart’s content.

Carnival brought a little fun to a classroom of kids from The Hospital School at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead who, as part of a creative arts unit, crafted pictures of Aussie sea creatures splashing around such as dolphins, humpback whales, great white sharks, turtles and flying fish to inspire the design for the Splashy Cove mural.

The drawings will be passed on to Carnival’s design team who will spend the next few months using the children’s artwork as inspiration for the graphics around the kid-friendly waterpark, before the ship arrives to its new homeport of Sydney in December 2019.

Symbolic of Carnival’s ongoing support and partnership with The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, the mural follows the 2018 announcement that a patient of The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, 7-year-old Matilda Jenkins, will become the very first goddaughter of a Carnival ship, Carnival Splendor.

“As our long term charitable partner, The Children’s Hospital at Westmead is near and dear to our hearts at Carnival. We’re always looking for new and different ways to bring the partnership to life. We couldn’t think of a better way to brighten up our new Splashy Cove waterpark on Carnival Splendor than with the creative talents of the courageous patients at the Hospital. We can’t wait to see kids playing in the space this coming December,” said Jennifer Vandekreeke, Vice President Carnival Cruise Line Australia.

Nicola Stokes, CEO, Sydney Children’s Hospitals Foundation said, “Art plays an important role in the healing and recovery journey for children in hospital and helps to distract them and entertain them. So we were very touched when Carnival invited The Children’s Hospital at Westmead to help with the new Splashy Cove mural. It is such a thrill for the children to know that their drawings of sea creatures will inspire the illustrator. It will also inspire everyone who sails on the Carnival Splendor and shows how deeply the team at Carnival care about helping sick kids.”
